Movies and cinema are one of the best inventions of the humanity, it has proved that creative and artistic skills can develop into creations that are liked and watched all over the world. The history of movies represents the development and the evolution of motion pictures and film in time. The history of film has its roots in the 19th century, and it’s been developing until today. This is actually one of its main characteristics, the dynamic of the cinema creations, depending on the tastes of the audience, the technologies which have improved in time, the artistic genius of the film creators. Motion pictures have developed into one of the most important means of entertainment and communication in the 20th century. Motion picture movies have a great impact in mass media, politics, technology and, of course, arts.
There are many common elements between film and dance or theatre plays, such as the lights, setting, script, costumes, actors and audiences. We could actually say that dance and plays are the precursors of film. The first type of camera obscura was used in the 6th century and it developed in time, until it presented a projected moving image. The first moving images were invented in 1830 and in 1877 a horse was photographed in fast motion, using 24 stereoscopic cameras. In 1888 the second experimental movie was made, known as the earliest surviving motion picture. The kinetograph was patented in 1891 and the first instantaneous pictures were taken. Then, in 1895 the cinematograph was presented to the audience in Paris, together with the first pictures. In time, all sort of improvements have been brought to what we call cameras today, and it was the result of hard work of several inventors.
The era of the film began with the silent film, which presented images, but no sounds, while sounds or music was accompanied live with the film. At the beginning of the 20th century the films already lasted several minutes and they became a known industry. Later on, the film techniques improved and they began to have film exhibitions, presenting the filming effects and animation. After 1910 actors became to be known by the public and they started to get credit for their work. Although it all started in the United States, the film industry developed in France, Germany, Italy and other European countries afterwards. This was the beginning of the film seen as art.
